check with the laws at your state’s DMV.
Most states have occupant restraint laws for passengers under 18 yoa – I would check your states law.
Almost all states require restraint systems for passengers in the truck bed, and some even require restraint systems for the dog.
A camper shell is no protection for a passenger, and is usually the first thing to fly off during an accident. They have been known to take body parts (including heads) along with them when they are knocked loose.
What states will you be traveling through? It depends on the state. In Arizona, anybody of any age can ride in the bed of a pickup. Other states it is not legal. Other states have age restrictions.
In some states seat belts are required, others they are not. In AZ, seat belts ARE required, however it is okay to ride in an open pick up bed without seatbelts. Crazy.
In some states it is legal to ride in a trailer that is being towed. In other states it is not legal.
These little laws vary by state. My road atlas (from 1999) has a table with all of these laws by state. Unfortunately, riding in pickup beds was not listed.
